DEFINING KOSHER The following is an outline of a very intricate set of rules that make up the kosher laws. It is meant only to provide a general overview. A competent rabbi must always be consulted for proper interpretation and implementation of these laws. The actual Hebrew word "kosher" means "right" or "proper." When applied to food, the term indicates that an item is fit for consumption according to Jewish Law. The term kashrus refers to the general subject of kosher food. There are three categories by which kosher food is classified: Meat (fleishig), Dairy (milchig) and Pareve (neutral). In addition, there are other rules and categories.
